A Ugandan woman, 37, has been found guilty of the female genital mutilation (FGM)of her daughter, in the first conviction of its kind in the UK.
The court heard that in a bid to silence the police, the defendants had allegedly engaged in witchcraft. A search of the couple’s property found spells inside 40 frozen limes and two ox tongues with screws embedded into them.
The woman and her partner, a 43-year-old Ghanaian man, both from Walthamstow, east London, denied the charges of FGM and failing to protect a girl from risk of genital mutilation.
