The UK government has confirmed to develop a plan in the coming months to demolish Grenfell tower where 72 people died in a fire eight-years ago.

It will likely take close to two years to take the building down, through a “careful and sensitive progressive deconstruction that happens behind the wrapping”, according to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has promised to carefully remove materials from the site, communal areas, or parts of the tower and return them for the memorial if the community wants.

The Grenfell Tower monument Commission has been consulting on proposals for a monument near the tower.

Five design teams have been chosen to develop the monument, with the winner expecting to submit a planning proposal by late 2026.
