HMRC have declared more than three million people have yet to submit their self-assessment tax returns as the deadline approaches at midnight.
Those who fail to submit their 2023/2024 tax return today face an instant £100 pound fine, even if there is no outstanding tax to pay.
Fixed penalties for ‘non-compliance’ will be issued to those who fail to submit by midnight, warned HMRC. The fines can even build with interest the longer uncompleted tax returns are left.
Some individuals may not even realise that they must file tax returns, receiving external income from sources such as rentals, investments or overseas earnings must all be declared, HMRC said.
HMRC the most efficient way to submit returns was to use its online portal.
HMRC warns outstanding tax payments must also be made by the ends of today. Those who do not pay within three months of the deadline, face fines of £10 per day, up to a total maximum of £900, with further penalties applied after six months and a year, including added interest on top.
