This year marks the centenary of women over 30 gaining the right to vote in the UK.
The Representation of the People Act in 1918 was a watershed moment in the fight for gender equality, but it wasn’t until 1928 that women over 21 could vote – finally achieving the same voting rights as men.
It is a fight that continues to rage on into the 21st century. Movements like #MeToo and the Women’s March have taken on the mantle from the suffragettes and are continuing the battle for women’s rights.
There are a plethora of events and exhibitions happening to celebrate the centenary, including a ‘Votes for Women’ weekend (3 and 4 February) at the Museum of London. It will be a family-friendly affair with a suffragette rally, poetry masterclass, workshops, banner-making, and interactive performances.
