Pope Francis has been admitted to hospital for bronchitis treatment after experiencing breathing difficulties, according to the Vatican.

The 88-year-old pontiff was taken to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Friday following a series of meetings, including one with CNN CEO Mark Thompson. Reports suggest that while he remains mentally alert, he is struggling to speak for extended periods.

The Vatican confirmed that he will undergo additional tests and continue receiving treatment at the hospital. His scheduled audience on Saturday and the mass at Saint Peter’s Basilica on Sunday will proceed in his absence.
Francis has faced ongoing health challenges, including previous hospitalisations for bronchitis and mobility issues caused by knee and nerve pain.
Despite these concerns, he has remained active in his papal duties. However, he has previously acknowledged the possibility of stepping down if his health significantly declines.
