The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party, voted overwhelmingly to block Andy Burnham’s request to stand in the Gorton and Denton by-election. The committee includes prime minister Sir Kier Starmer.

In normal circumstances, such a decision might go under the radar. But in recent months, Burnham has emerged as a strong candidate to replace Starmer as the leader of the Labour Party. The decision to block Burnham has attracted criticism, with the prime minister himself facing backlash from some Labour MPs.
