Storm Hernando has caused major flight cancellations after bringing heavy snow across the north-east coast of the US on Sunday afternoon, and is expected to bring much more snow today.
Heathrow, the UK’s busiest airport, is suffering major delays today after Storm Hernando has forced 32 flights leaving from LHR into JFK International to be rescheduled.
In the United States over 5,000 flights across the US today have been cancelled and an additional 600 have been delayed.
The United States National Weather Service confirmed that parts of the US have seen over 22 inches of snow with “heavy snow” continuing to fall.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani declared a state of emergency last night and has imposed a city wide travel ban in response to the blizzard.
59 million people across the region have been placed under weather warnings and advised to stay at home.
Emergency travel and the travel of essential workers is exempt from the ban.
Mamdani also announced a full, traditional snow day for public schools since 2019, across the region with “no online school or remote learning”.
Warming centres have been opened in 13 school buildings as the country prepares for its first dangerous blizzard warning in over a decade from its most powerful north-eastern storm.
Multiple warnings have been issued in New York City, Long Island and Boston, as well as several other coastal areas. At the start of this month, an extreme cold weather period in New York City resulted in the deaths of 18 people.
Power outages are widely felt across the north-east with nearly 90,000 properties without power in New Jersey alone.
